The compilation of this bibliography began with entries in Portuguese that might pertain to the Library of Congress holdings on the Portuguese in Southeast Asia, including East Timor. The bibliography is the result of collaboration between two divisions and a testimony to the fundamental commitment of the Library to assist scholars and policy makers in obtaining easier access to its collections.
The bibliography covers entries pertaining to the Portuguese in Southeast Asia: Malacca, Moluccas, and East Timor, with a heavier concentration of entries on the latter. It should be made clear that most of the compilation was undertaken in 1993, while the processing of the entries and the final steps towards publication took place between 1994 and 1997. This means that the vast majority of the entries for more recent months and surrounding the bestowing of the Nobel Prize to the two Timorese, does not appear in these pages as they are being processed for cataloging and thus not accessible as yet.
